We already knew the redesigned Scion xD was a sporty hatchback with a youthful and faithful following. But what exactly does this zippy ride offer to those who have yet to experience Scion? We’ll start with some basics:

Engine: 1.8L DOHC four-cylinder – Power: 128 horsepower at 6,000 rpm; 125 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm – Transmission: Four-speed automatic, five-speed manual

Brakes: Front ventilated disc brakes, rear drums. ABS with brake assist, electronic brake force distribution (EBD) – Tires: All-season, temporary spare tire P195/60R16.

Price: $17,200 before dealer coupons or special offers / trade-ins

Standard features include: Air conditioning, rear seat heater ducts; front sport seats, fold down rear seats (60/40), flat folding rear seats, recline; power door locks and power windows with driver side auto down; electric rear window defroster; three-spoke steering wheel, tilt steering, steering wheel audio controls; carpet floor mats; cruise control; keyless entry; rear spoiler; AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA six speaker stereo, audio auxiliary input jack with USB audio input; Bluetooth capability; 16-inch steel wheels.

The car is comfortable, and fits more luggage then it would appear. The xD is sporty and uses every bit of its 1.8 liter powerplant. In fact, we bet you’ll hit 70 mph without even knowing. The ride is smooth and control is perfectly responsive through tight turns or winding around traffic.

The all new 2011 Scion tC finally has a bit of a design upgrade, along with some fun additions under the hood. Scion’s little Japanese sports coupe never fails to disappoint – and still attracts a younger crowd looking for speed and reliability – all under $20,000. There are more edgier, straighter lines that go along with the tC in its new design. Gone are some of the lumpy corners previous models have contained, but there is still no mistaking it for any other sporty auto.

2011′s tC comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing and a variable intake manifold. That little puppy lets off 180 horsepower at 3200 rpm. With the larger engine up 0.1 liters, tC can put out 18 more hp and 11 pound-feet over the 2010 edition. And tC can boost to 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds manual, 8.3 seconds with the automatic. Fuel economy ratings are estimated about 23/31 city & highway.

Inside, the Scion tC has a shorter roofline, but wider, more comfortable seating. The dash seems upgraded too, with enough lights and bleeps to make you feel like Han Solo piloting the Falcon to light speed. You have the option of steering wheel mounted controls, XM radio, in-dash nav and entertainment system.

Acceleration in the 2011 tC is reported to be smooth, in both manual and automatic versions. With a starting price hovering around $19,000 you might never expect this much comfort and speed. But Scion brings it home again with their sporty tC. We can’t wait to take it for another test drive!

Scion xB has been known for its pointy corners and boxy look. While 2011′s model retains much of the basic design, xB has a new, rounded off look for next year. xB’s been retooled both inside and out – Scion’s shrunk the grill on this mighty van, revised both front and rear bumpers, along with a lighting change. You can also choose from a couple new colors – including the “toughly” named “Army Rock” and “Elusive Blue.”

What we really like talking about, and looking at, is the updated interior in 2011′s Scion xB: with center console receiving a sliding armrest; the instrument cluster tweaked to improve readability; and the steering column now incorporates tilt and telescoping functions. Under the hood – 2011′s xB contains a 158 horse power, 2.4-liter engine, which can be mated either to a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic.

Scion xB pricing will rise by approximately $150, so expect to pay base $17,340 and automatic-equipped cars, $18,290. Look for 2011′s xB to hit Scion dealerships later this March.

AMERICA – F*&K YEAH! Toyota wants to bring their Smart Car sized two-seater iQ to the United States branded as a Scion. No word on whether or not the iQ name tag will remain on Scion’s vehicle, but this micro-subcompact is destined to be a top selling city car, and fits the design make up of edgy, generation-twitter car buyers who purchase Scions.

One can assume the iQ will keep its 1.3 liter 4-cyl. pumping out a tiny yet impressive 99 horse power. A 3-cylinder with only 68 horse power may also be available from your Toyota/Scion dealer, which is perfect for those going between Brooklyn and the financial district on weekdays. Check out more in the Scion press release below.

Toyota iQ coming to US as Scion

Scion will unveil a micro-subcompact concept car at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. The concept reflects Scion’s youthful image and represents a new segment for the brand aimed toward the growing urbanization trend.

The Scion press conference will take place on Wednesday, April 8 at 12:05 p.m. EDT in the Galleria on level four in the Javits Convention Center.

Production versions of the xB urban utility vehicle, tC sports coupe and xD urban subcompact five-door will be on display in the Scion space as well as five highly-modified vehicles that debuted at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas.

Scion parent company Toyota is working on new airbag technology, which would eject the safety bag from the center consul to help in the event of a side impact.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) features a rear center console with an airbag that deploys between the rear passenger seats. The picture is a little deceiving as this demonstration rig shows a weird upper console which we guess represents a section of the roof. Perhaps Toyota built this into the demonstration rig as a point of reference to show the deployment area, but it gives the impression that the airbag is deploying from the roof. A closer look at the photo indeed shows the airbag deploying from the upper center backrest area just above the dummy’s right shoulder.

Toyota doesn’t mention which model(s) will receive the new airbag. The press release simply states that the SRS will debut in “a Toyota model to be launched in Japan in the near future.” But one should guess that more airbags are always good and that a center airbag can be effective so that when you’re driving your parents-in-law home after Christmas dinner on a wet, slippery night they don’t cluck their heads together when you end up crashing the car because of their incessant bickering.

Thanks to Scionnews.net for the scoop.

TRD edition 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, in matte black with red trim, and red TRD lowering springs provide this tC with its menacing presence. For additional stability when cornering, the tC is fitted with a red TRD rear sway bar. A TRD sport muffler gives the tC RS 5.0 an aggressive sound signature, while a TRD exterior badge marks the car. A black rear lip spoiler will also be available.

The TRD theme is continued inside with a black leather steering wheel featuring red stitching, black seats with red accents and floor mats with the TRD logo. The tC RS 5.0 is also equipped with a cargo mat. Individually numbered badging completes the uniqueness of this vehicle.

No more than 2,000 units of the tC Release Series 5.0 will be built.
Now that’s one bad ass looking drifter. Scion has teamed up with the Long Beach, California Formula Drift scene and turned this mild mannered tC into a vehicle worthy of Japanese streets. This front wheel drive Scion has been transformed into a rear wheel car by exhausted and suspension experts RS*R. This tC’s stock engine has also been swapped out for a high performance longitudinal one. A drifting Scion needs more get up and go power than your average drag car – with a 3SGE Beams motor and HKS GT3037 turbo and inter cooler, Blitz Dual SBC boost controller and AEM EMS engine management system you’re good to go. The performance has been raised from 161 hp stock to over 400 hp. Nice!

Jack Hollis, Scion VP states; “Scion has participated in motor sports for three years and the fan support has been incredible. Drifting is an exciting, emerging motor sport with a dedicated and intense fan base. We think the fans will be just as excited as we are about our RS*R Scion tC as it demonstrates one of Scion’s primary philosophies, customization.”
