At 120 inches, the [Scion] iQ is actually quite a bit larger than the 98-inch Smart ForTwo, but you can’t help but get the impression Toyota is directly targeting that car with its choice of names. The iQ is actually, according to Toyota, the “world’s smallest four-passenger vehicle.” The thinking behind the 3+1 thing is that the front passenger seat is mounted a bit more forward than the driver’s seat, creating a smidge more leg room behind the passenger, thus enabling the transportation of a hobbit, as opposed to the quadruple amputee that will need to sit behind the driver.

In what we’re sure is an extremely important feature for potential iQ customers, the trunk can fit two golf bags when the seats are folded down. In an effort to overcome what will surely be lots of safety concerns about such a small vehicle, the iQ will be fitted as standard with 10 airbags. Motivation comes courtesy of a 90 HP, 1.3-liter engine.

Toyota & Scion will be jumping into the small car market (and we mean REALLY small) as the concept vehicle from Scion, iQ, will arrive on North American Soil by 2011. In case you forgot the Scion iQ is the tiny vehicle which debuted earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show.

Power will likely be provided by Toyota’s 67 bhp 1.0-liter petrol engine as well as the recently introduced 1.33-liter dual VVT-i with 98 bhp and 125 Nm of torque. In the future, the car could be equipped with a battery-electric powertrain like the one featured on the iQ-based Toyota FT-EV Concept. The Five Axis bodykit and jumbo wheels seen on the iQ concept will undoubtedly be left off the options chart.

Look for the Scion iQ in late 2010 as a 2011 model or maybe in early 2011.

The Scion iQ concept may be one of the most intensely futuristic cars (at least from Toyota) to hit American roads since Smart’s fortwo. We do not necessarily mean with its onboard technology, we’re more speaking from a design standpoint. City Cars are the latest trend in many countries, and the way we fight for fuel and environment, and the fact that populations are exploding the New York to LA – we may see a future of nothing but tiny rides.

Introduced at the New York Auto Show, this Scion made a tiny splash on the awaiting crowd, who flashed cameras and iPhones at the new city car. However, the car was introduced with modifications that make more sense at the Tokyo Auto Salon, including 10-inch LCD screens and surround sound that will make your film geek cousin jealous.

We have reported on Toyota’s attempts to get the iQ to American markets, and we hope a production ready (for the USA) mini car will hold a decent amount of extras, with a low price tag. Scion may now be competing not only with Toyota’s Yaris, the Mini Cooper and Smart’s fortwo – but with new comers Soul (from Kia) and Ford’s revived Fiesta. Once an official price tag is released Scionpedia will be the first to drop it for you!

AMERICA – F*&K YEAH! Toyota wants to bring their Smart Car sized two-seater iQ to the United States branded as a Scion. No word on whether or not the iQ name tag will remain on Scion’s vehicle, but this micro-subcompact is destined to be a top selling city car, and fits the design make up of edgy, generation-twitter car buyers who purchase Scions.

One can assume the iQ will keep its 1.3 liter 4-cyl. pumping out a tiny yet impressive 99 horse power. A 3-cylinder with only 68 horse power may also be available from your Toyota/Scion dealer, which is perfect for those going between Brooklyn and the financial district on weekdays. Check out more in the Scion press release below.

Toyota iQ coming to US as Scion

Scion will unveil a micro-subcompact concept car at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. The concept reflects Scion’s youthful image and represents a new segment for the brand aimed toward the growing urbanization trend.

The Scion press conference will take place on Wednesday, April 8 at 12:05 p.m. EDT in the Galleria on level four in the Javits Convention Center.

Production versions of the xB urban utility vehicle, tC sports coupe and xD urban subcompact five-door will be on display in the Scion space as well as five highly-modified vehicles that debuted at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas.
